Use SEO for First Page Rankings in Google and Yahoo!
I hope you are reading this before you have started creating your site! One of the biggest mistakes a person can make when starting an online business is to create, or pay someone else to create a site without first considering SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
Here is the cold hard truth of online business sites:
A site can be absolutely perfect. It could win awards it is so attractive. Yet, it could still show up on page 76 of Google search results!
Ugly Sites vs. "Pretty Sites"
On the other hand, a site selling the same product could win an award for the year’s ugliest site. It could also be on PAGE ONE of the results.
In this case, the hot-shot web designer can keep his fancy site. I will take the ugly site on Google's first page any day!
It doesn’t have to be one way or the other. With careful consideration and planning beforehand, a site can be attractive AND be on Google's first page. For this to occur, SEO must be considered before the first page is created.
Your Site MUST Appeal to Both Humans AND Search Engines!
Search engine optimization and web design must not be thought of separately. Allow me to repeat myself. You will waste your time if you design a site without considering SEO during the creation process. Every line of code needs to be considered for its impact on both human visitors and the search engines!
If you don’t have a working knowledge of search engine optimization, hold off on the actual development of the site. Only when your thoughts are simultaneously focused on SEO and the site's design should development begin.
A side note: Be SURE you understand what things Google might BAN your website for! Also, avoid the many Internet marketing scams which promise you boat loads of traffic!
Quick SEO Tips
* Be sure each page's title tag is relatively short, unique, and contains the keyword that page is optimized for.
* Only use meta keywords which are found in the content of the page.
* Make sure your code is not "bloated". Many "push button" page creation tools cause bloated code...don't use them!
* Try to get as many one-way incoming links from sites with similar content as possible.
* Keep the keyword density of your pages between 2% and 7%.
* Don't get banned by using hidden text, link farms, or page cloaking (not to be confused with "link cloaking").
