Building Your Site

One Skill You Just Gotta Have...

Look, I won't tell you that learning how to build a site is easy. I remember struggling with it in the beginning. I’d finally learn how to do one thing, like centering or linking a picture, and then there would be 10 more things in line to learn.

However, simple web page creation skills are a must! You absolutely have to learn this skill. I don’t know of one single successful Internet marketer who was able to skip this step. Even if you only want to create blog sites using WordPress, there will still be plenty of times when simple web design skills are required.

The best news is that you DO NOT have to be a pro at it!

I am definitely not a pro. If you study our Cactus Canyon site, you will notice it is about as simple as can be; it uses only tables, text and images. Google likes and ranks the site well and its simplicity and personal touch builds trust for our visitors. Those two factors are ALL that matter!

I have included many helpful links and tutorials for you here. You should expect to spend several weeks of studying AND PRACTICING! That amount of time should be sufficient for beginning in earnest.

Again, not knowing how to create simple sites and pages will be a MAJOR handicap for achieving success! I will be a mistake if you believe otherwise.

Sorry to sound so stern here…I don’t mean to lecture you. I just want you to understand how important this part is to the process.

This is perhaps one of the most difficult hurdles many beginners face. Building a working website is not rocket science, but I will not claim either that it is easy to learn. You may use only a WordPress blog for your site, but I HIGHLY suggest you learn also how to make a "real" website. I can't emphasize enough how much of a handicap it will be not having simple web design skills.

Anyone can learn web design. I would be very irresponsible if I suggested you could be successful without learning to publish basic web pages.

Why I Like Dreamweaver

Dreamweaver is the most popular web editor. It is what I use to create my sites with. Many beginners choose to use a free tool in the beginning. That is fine, but no serious marketer can last long without a robust web editor.

Dreamweaver is expensive. However, if you know of any student in public school or in college…or any school employee, you can buy Dreamweaver through them at campustech.com for educational discounts. The educational version of Dreamweaver is the same as the retail version.

Here are some key points about Dreamweaver which I really enjoy!

* Building simple pages with just tables, text and images is SUPER easy! These kinds of pages are all that are needed to start a very successful Internet marketing career!

* If you choose, you can easily FTP your pages right out of Dreamweaver. I use my trusty FTP program, but Dreamweaver does have a cool upload feature built in.

* Here is my favorite feature! Dreamweaver templates make my life SO much easier! No, these are not pre-made pages I am talking about. Imagine your site grows to 10 or more pages and there is the typical navigation bar on each page with links to all 10 pages. What happens if you add another page and want to update the navigation bar on all the pages? It would be a real bummer if you had to go in and modify all 10 pages! Simply create your basic page layout as a template. With that Dreamweaver template page here is all you have to do to add a new link to every page, change your header image, change your copyright date, etc…on every page: Simply open your template file, make the changes you need to, click save, and ALL of your pages will be changed instantly! Then simply upload the changed files. With this feature I can add a new link to my navigation menu to all 80 pages of my retail site in less than a minute!

* If you advance to using CSS, Dreamweaver is ready and waiting for you!

* I can easily add styles on the fly…like having yellow highlights on selected sales page text.

* Because it is the most popular web editor, there are about a million tutorials and help files online for Dreamweaver. Google for anything related to using Dreamweaver and you will have the answer instantly! (This is a HUGE plus for using Dreamweaver!)

Adobe offers a free Dreamweaver trial. Download it, spend a weekend with it and you’ll be sold.

If you know a student in the public schools or in college...or a staff member of either, you can save money when
buying Dreamweaver here.

Site Check List

Here are a few simple checks to make sure your site has the best chance with the search engines.

1. Title Tag - Is the title of each page unique? The keyword that page is optimized for should be at or near the beginning of the title. Make the title short and to the point. “Leather Dog Collars” is much better than “Our Leather Dog Collars are High Quality”.

2. Meta Tags - If you use Meta keywords, make sure you ONLY have keywords listed which are relevant to THAT page. Do not use Meta keywords which are not found on the page. Usually the meta keywords should only be the keyword, and the forms of the keyword which the page is optimized for. Example: leather dog collars, dog collars, collars, leather collars. Google gives meta keywords no relevancy now days; but if you insert non-relevant keywords to that page, they may consider it spamming!

3. Affiliate Links - DO NOT put affiliate links on a brand new page which has not been indexed yet by the search engines. When you do put affiliate links on, only put one or two per page…at most! The last thing in the world you want to do is give Google any thoughts that your page might be a part of an “affiliate site”.

4. AdSense – I do not even put AdSense on a new page until it is indexed by the search engines. Google would not care of course, but it is thought other search engines may. You DO NOT want to look like a “made for AdSense site” (MFA).

5. AdSense - When you do have AdSense on a page, is there a LOT more content than ads? Remember, less is more when it comes to how many AdSense ads to put on a page. In almost all cases, lower numbers of ads mean a higher CPM.

6. Linking – You linking structure needs to be sound. Text links are MUCH better than image links for your navigation and other internal links. The anchor text of each link should be very descriptive (with the keyword of the linked page if possible) as to what the linked page’s topic is.

7. Simple Design – Keep your page simple and clean! DO NOT try to impress people with your web design skills! Easy to read information is what people want – not sound or flashing graphics.

8. Trust Factor – If you are selling ANYTHING, even affiliate products, the trust factor will make or break you. If your site does not look trustworthy, people will not stay long enough to click anything…much less buy anything. Make your site as personal feeling as you can; put as much of “you” into it as possible if you are asking people to buy anything.

9. Home Page Links – For indexing reasons, make sure all links back to your home page are the full URL. Instead of just using “index.htm”, the link should go to http://www.YourDomain.com.

10. Google Webmaster Tools – Be sure to register there and specify that you want all references to your domain to resolve to the www version. In other words, if Google sees a page out there with a link to your site, but the page used yoursite.com instead of www.yoursite.com, Google will know that you want them to only consider the www.yoursite.com version of your address. Otherwise duplicate content issues can arise.

11. Site Map – Go to my member’s page and input your domain’s address into the site map creation tool I have linked to there. Generate a text file site map. Follow the instructions at Google Webmaster Tools for letting Google know about your site map.

12. Duplicate Content – Is there ANY chance that ANY of your content could be considered duplicate? Run any questionable pages through www.copyscape.com. If CopyScape finds duplicate content, so will Google.

13. Internal Linking – Internal linking is also important to Page Rank. Be sure that all your pages link to each other from within the content of your various pages. Having the same navigation bar on each page linking to all the same links does not count. Google discounts the links found in a common navigation bar. However, if you have links to your other pages here and there from within the content of pages, that will help your page rank status.

14. Submit Your Links – There is no need to submit your link directly to the search engines. It means far more if the engines find your link out there on a page they already have indexed. Therefore, use my list of directories on the members’ page as a starting point for submitting your site to relevant categories of as many high quality directories as you have time for. Also, start writing articles for such places as ezinearticles.com, etc. Include your sites link in the article’s bio section.

15. Keep adding pages of content to your site on a regular basis!
