Your Website's Hosting Account

I Can Be a Cheap Skate In Some Ways, But...

Sure, in my early and failed attempts at Internet marketing I found and used free hosts for my sites. I don’t know why, but most beginners think like that. I won’t list here all the reasons free hosts are bad news (watch the tutorials below and I’ll explain them to you), but pretty much boils down to this:

1. You need a REAL HOST for your website.

2. If you are unwilling to invest $4 to $8 per month for your own host, don’t waste your time with Internet marketing.

One of the best things about online marketing is its LOW monetary risk and start-up costs. However, there are expenses involved and hosting is right near the top!

General Hosting Questions

What is a host and why do I need one?

Although it is possible to have your own server in your home or business and “host” your site on it, this requires many technical skills. 99% of all sites are hosted with a hosting company which specializes in serving out your web pages. The hosting company can be anywhere. In most cases you will choose a host within your country. The host owns web servers and rents space on them for your web site. They handle all the technical issues such as backups and configurations.

How exactly do I get hosting?

There really is no reason to pay more than $4.95 per month for a basic hosting account. I suggest Host Gator for your hosting. I have used them for years and highly suggest them. Whether you purchase your hosting with them or with another host, the process is the same. You simply find the hosting package you want and click the “Buy” button. During checkout you will be asked the usual questions and the name of the domain you will be hosting. Therefore, you need to have your domain registered before you purchase your hosting.

How do I know which host and which hosting package I need?

In almost all cases, the beginning website owner only needs the most basic hosting package the host has to offer. If in the future you find your site requires more robust hosting, it is a simple matter to upgrade to more full featured packages. I suggest starting out with the lowest level package the host has available.

Ok, I bought the hosting, now what?

The host will send you an email with all the details of your hosting account. You must have this email before you can proceed. The first thing to do when the email arrives is to find what the two domain servers are that the host has assigned to your domain. They will be in some form like this: ds1.securehost.net. Once you know the domain servers, logon to your domain registrar account and input the domain servers into the correct fields. It will take from a few hours to a few days for the information to propagate to all the Internet name servers.

Once this occurs, you will be able to FTP to the new hosting account and upload your web pages. If you wish to go ahead and upload your pages before the replication finishes, the email the host sent contains an IP address which you my FTP to. If your site is currently active with another host and you wish to change to a new host with no down time, you must FTP your site to the new host via the IP address before the name servers are updated.

More hosting hints:

Make sure you supply the new host with an email address which you check often. The may send you, from time to time, important notices and renewal reminders which you won’t want to miss.

If You Have Hosting Already, But Want To Change To a Less Expensive One:

Changing Hosting Accounts – Did you sign up with an expensive host and now you want to change to one of Host Gator's low cost plans?

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go ahead and open an account with another host. You will need to tell them what the domain name is that you will be hosting. The host will send an email with all of your login information. The information will contain your FTP information. (If you are using a high priced host because they make it easy for you to publish your site without FTP, you will need to download a free FTP program and learn how to use it. The process of FTP is very easy.)
You will need to configure your FTP software to connect with your host via its IP address. The IP address will look sort of like this (but your numbers will be different) 120.21.218.8 instead of the normal www.yoursite.com or ftp.yoursite.com. You will need to FTP to the IP address instead of the domain address because the domain is still pointing to your old host.
  2. Upload your site to the new host. Read the email very carefully as to where the files should go. Some hosts require the files in the “www”, “html”, “public”, etc. folders.
  3. When the site is uploaded, login to your domain registrar’s account (where you bought the domain…not necessarily where you have your hosting) and change your domain’s name server information to what was supplied to you in the new host’s email. The name server addresses will look something like this:
    NS28.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
    NS29.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
There will always be two name servers.
  4. After you change the name server information, make a slight change to your home page and upload it to the new server (you still have to use the IP address connection for now). Make sure it is a change you can easily see.
  5. In a few hours (it could take up to 48), go to your site in your browser (www.yoursite.com) and look for that change. You will not see the change right away because the DNS servers around the world still are pointing to your old host. Eventually, they will become updated with the new name servers you supplied. At that time you will see the minor change you made on your page.
  6. Now you know for sure that people are visiting your site on your new host. It may take 48 hours to get all the name servers updated around the world. Therefore, wait 48 hours and then delete the other files on the other host. This is important because there could be server logs out there somehow indexed by Google (it does happen) which would have your old host’s IP address listed. This could cause duplicate content issues! Be sure to delete the files. Don’t forget to close the account too!
  7. You may leave your FTP software configured to your new host account with the IP address or you may change it to your domain path…see your email for the FTP path using the domain name.
